Adenosine monophosphate: overview, uses, side effects, and precautions

Adenosine is a compound organically found in our body and is also used to manufacture various medicines. This chemical is found in three forms: adenosine, adenosine monophosphate (AMP), and adenosine triphosphate (ATP).

When used in medicines, it is usually used to treat heart conditions like paroxysmal supraventricular tachycardia (a condition in which the heart rate is higher than expected) and is only consumed on medical prescription. But adenosine is also associated with weight loss in a specific population (athletes, severely ill patients, or people suffering from weak blood circulation).

 

Overview

AMP is also called 5’-adenylic acid and consists of nucleoside (nucleobase adenine), phosphate, and sugar ribose. It is crucial for various cellular metabolic processes and is interconverted to Adenosine diphosphate (ADP)/ATP.


Uses

AMP is naturally used to synthesize RNA (Ribonucleic acid) and generate energy in the form of ATP from the consumed food. Apart from that, it is used to treat various health issues.

According to a report, 90% of porphyria cutanea tarda patients got effective results after consuming a specific quantity of AMP for a month. Moreover, the problem of photosensitivity was wholly healed in 50% of the patients after consuming AMP.

AMP is considered an effective compound to fight against shingles outbreaks and reduce the pain of existing shingles. In a double-blind trial, patients (shingles) were given a specific dose of AMP/placebo thrice a week for 4 weeks. Patients consuming AMP healed faster and even observed symptoms of prevention in the development of postherpetic neuralgia.

As per a study, AMP can be helpful to treat cold sores and prevent their reoccurrence after taking a specific portion.

 

  1. Leg Sores

According to a study, AMP is considered effective in treating venous leg ulcers caused by poor blood circulation. It can help to alleviate fluid retention, swelling, and itchiness.

 

  1. herpes labialis

As per the study, AMP showed a positive effect in 36% of the patients during their treatment of herpes labialis. Even it reduces the possibility of its reoccurrence by 23%.

 

Side effects

The possible side effects of AMP are unclear, but some experts suggest the following side effects:

Due to high levels of adenosine, one may experience:

  • Difficulty in breathing
  • Headache

  • Abnormal heart rate
  • Nausea
  • Excessive sweating

Precautions

Some people should not consider taking AMP to avoid health complications. These are:

 

  1. Pregnant & lactating mothers

The effect of AMP is unknown on pregnancy or breastfeeding & hence one should avoid it.

 

  1. Gout patients

AMP generates ATP, which can increase uric acid levels in the blood and urine. Such a situation can trigger gout and lead to joint inflammation.

 

  1. Heart patients

As ATP reduces blood flow to the heart, it worsens many heart conditions.
